From Longyearbyen to Barentsburg by snowmobile
The short snowscooter drive from Longyearbyen to Barentsburg is just the first leg of a four days expeditions in Svalbard, with the purpose of exploring the most remote corners of south-east Spitsbergen.
We are preparing the snowmobiles, ready to leave for Barentsburg and for Svea. Today total travel time will be around 8 hours, for about 100 kilometres.
We start crossing the Longyear glacier where, from the top, there is a beautiful view.
We then descent in the opposite valley, where we see also a Svalbard reindeer.
We are getting closer to Barentsburg. Parts of the Isfjord fjord are free from ice and we can see the open water in several distant places (bottom-right picture).
The town of Barentsburg, with an economy based on coal mining. On the right picture, you can see the coal extraction facility, with a big pile of coal in the front of the frozen fjord.
