Barentsburg excursion by snowmobile from Longyearbyen
Snowscooter trip to Barentsburg from Longyearbyen. Barentsburg is a little russian mining town, living on coal mines. The snowscooter trip takes about two hours each way. Barentsburg can be reached also by ship, when icing conditions in the fjord allows.
En-route by snowmobile from Longyearbyen to Barentsurg, driving into valleys and along beaches. The sky is not clear, but the light is beautiful and pleasant. As the temperature of both air and water has been higher than normal on December and January, Isfjord is almost totally free from ice, a situation quite different from what I saw here two year ago.
My guide and my snowmobile.
A nice building in Barentburg and the fjord. The ice is still very thin and sparse, only the inner part of the fjord is actually covered by ice and snow. For additional pictures about Barentsburg and the surrounding landscape, please see my April 1999 trip.
Back to Longyearbyen. It's getting darker, with some blue light. The bottom-right picture shows the lights of Longyearbyen seen from the top of Longyear glacier.
Back in my beautiful hotel room in Longyearbyen.
The kennel, the dogs and the sleds, a very interesting experience !
The sled is almost armed and ready to go.
