Lima day tour
August 30th 2003
Sightseeing in Lima, visiting Plaza de Armas, the church and monastery of San Francisco, the catacombs, before continuing to more modern parts of the city. Lima is one of the main gateway cities during tours to South America and it certainly worth to spend a day here.
The city tour starts in a
pre-Inca cemetery, where tombs and mummies has been recently discovered.
Pictures of Lima. Visit to
Plaza de Armas where there is the Cathedral, the palace of government ed other important buildings. Here a 400 degrees panorama.
The tour then continues to
San Francisco church and monastery, with his characteristic baroque style.
The
decorations inside the church are very beautiful and elaborated.
Inside San Francisco church on the top pictures, the altar and, bottom-left, the walls and the roof.
The arcade in the nearby
San Francisco monastery is very interesting because of the ceramics and the paintings on the wall, and for the wooden roof.
The internal of the
sacresty.
Below the church and the monastry, there are
catacombs... very interesting, but be sure to follow the guide and to not get lost !
From the
heavy gates on the roof of the tunnels, the internal of San Francisco church is visible.
Skulls and bones are stoned in large containers. It is said that the catacombs may contain the rests of up to 70000-90000 people.
The city tour in Lima ends in modern and nice
big mall, close to the shores of the Pacific Ocean.
Elegant buildings near the mall.
From the mall there is a
beautiful viewover the beach and to a fine restourant built over the water.
From the roof of a tall building where a my friend live, I take a
panoramic photo of Lima, under un unusual clear sky. It is now the time to go to the airport for my long flight back to my country. Goodbye Perù !
